SUMMARY:Natural Pigment for Paints and Inks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this two day course which covers the making of plant material into natural inks\, and earth pigments into watercolour paint. \nOver the weekend\, you will learn about the alchemy and variety of mordants which enhance and transform natural ink material into a range of different hues and colours. You will use plants – utilised for centuries to extract dye for fabrics and to make inks for painting with. \nAt a Glance \n\nHands-on and sociable workshop\nColourful\, transformative and satisfying\nPlant and mineral knowledge with a bit of history\nA chance to discover more about our natural world\nDelicious\, home-cooked meals provided\n\nWhat You Will Gain \n\nKnowledge of the basic building blocks used in making inks and paints\nAbility to forage and gather useful material from the land\nAn understanding of process and preparation\nAn understanding of alchemy and mordants\nKnowledge of paint and ink making\n\nDay 1 – Fiona will teach you how to transform flower petals\, leaves and tree material into a large palette of colours from vibrant primaries to a variety of beautiful subtle hues including browns\, grays and blacks\, some of which you will forage from the garden. By the end of the day you will have made up to 11 colours which can be experimented with on 100% cotton rag paper. \nDay 2 – Fiona will guide you in making a set of 6 watercolour paints from earth and mineral pigments\, some of which Fiona will have foraged and processed in advance. You may find some oxides in Hawkwood’s grounds which could be used during the session. By the end of the day you will have the opportunity to paint with these handmade watercolours on beautiful 100% cotton rag paper.

DESCRIPTION:With Helen Lomberg \nNature in Art at Wallsworth Hall is the world’s first museum and art gallery dedicated to art inspired by nature. They run creative art courses throughout the year. \nIn this one-day course\, create plant climbers\, supports\, trellises\, and garden hurdles from Somerset and Gloucestershire willow and hazel. Helen will guide you through the process\, helping you make unique pieces. By the end\, you’ll have 3-4 items to take home. \nThe tutor will provide the required materials for course participants.  The cost per person will be £12\, to be paid to the tutor on the day of the course.
